Today during Film Club, we talked about suspense in film.
- We began by examining a quote from Alfred Hitchcock that explains the difference between suspense and surprise.
- We discussed filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, and Jordan Peele and how these filmmakers use various techniques to create a suspenseful environment for the viewer.
- We reviewed film terminology such as low angle, high angle, diegetic sound, and nondiegetic sound.
- We watched suspenseful trailers and analyzed how the film terminology we studied "works" in these films.
- We concluded with each student getting to choose one film from a list of suspenseful films to watch on their own. Students were challenged to look for how the film terminology and various techniques "work" in the films to create a sense of suspense for the viewer.
