Film Club October 2020 Meeting

Today during Film Club, we talked about suspense in film. We began by examining a quote from Alfred Hitchcock that explains the difference between suspense and surprise. We discussed filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Christopher Nolan, and Jordan Peele and how these filmmakers use various techniques to create a suspenseful environment for the viewer. We reviewed film terminology such as low angle, high angle, diegetic sound, and nondiegetic sound. We watched suspenseful trailers and analyzed how the film terminology we studied "works" in these films. We concluded with each student getting to choose one film from a list of suspenseful films to watch on their own. Students were challenged to look for how the film terminology and various techniques "work" in the films to create a sense of suspense for the viewer.

Making Oscar's Predictions

Today during Film Club, we talked about our predictions for the Oscar's in 2021. We reviewed a sample Oscar's ballot from 2020 and a sample Oscar's Bingo Game from 2020. We shared our "must-watch" movies from 2020 and what movies we hope to see before the Oscars in April! We also discussed the difference between portraying difficult content in a book versus a film and how portraying something in a film can create more tension than it would in a book because of the combination of visual and sound effects. https://www.punchbowl.com/p/printable-oscar-ballot https://www.punchbowl.com/p/printable-oscar-bingo
